Educational Training Summary (Page 1 of 2)
Extensive Traditional, Nontraditional and World-Class Educational Training in Multiple Fields
Video: Wharton Professor Karl Ulrich on Innovation
"All advantage in business [and educational training] is the result of innovation. It's the result of having done something new and different, and it gives you a leg up on the competition."
Abraham Lincoln, one of our nation's greatest presidents and real-world defenders of the rule of law (the U.S. Constitution, which is "the supreme Law of the Land", and the related vision for our nation stated in the Declaration of Independence), utilized a similar educational path to learn leadership and law to the highest levels -- through effective homeschooling, diligent independent study, and extensive real-world learning and implementation...- Homeschooled (along with extensive traditional educational training) by incredible parents, a very large family, grandparents, priests in the family, many great sports coaches and many great neighbors. These family members, friends and community leaders greatly excelled (and currently excel) in leadership abilities, business management, marketing, engineering, innovation, analytics, law, accounting, art, other creative projects, and in leading by example. Growing up, I never had to look far to find people of character, and people with advanced abilities in their fields of interest. This type of educational background helps me see things from a very broad perspective, and it helps me regularly present innovative ideas to help individuals and businesses excel.
- 1984: Somewhat, or largely as a result of the above educational training, I was the only student selected from my high school class to represent the school for the Delaware State All-star Football Game -- primarily based upon leadership abilities (vs. overwhelming athletic abilities), but I could/can hold my own in most sports too! :)
- 1984-1986: Completed two years of mechanical engineering studies, while playing college football. Looking back, it's easy to see that I was more interested in learning about leadership directly from the coach, who had just won the National Division III football Championship the year before. Math, physics, structural analysis, and engineering concepts were pretty easy for me to understand. But, I was equally, or more interested in learning how the body works (initially through sports, then through nutrition and other studies), and learning about highly advanced, highly effective leadership philosophy. And, sports provide a great learning environment for learning about leadership philosophy and overcoming challenges.
- 1987 to present: Black Belt in Shotokan karate -- after 6 years of full-time training from a real martial arts school, not a commercial school -- plus additional training directly with many of the U.S. and world’s top martial artists at seminars and tournaments throughout the Mid-Atlantic area. This training provided, and continues to provide advanced leadership training in many ways that positively impact my life and my work.
- 1987 to 1992, 1994: Completed two and a half years of dietetics studies (attending school on a part-time basis), while training directly with many of the top martial artists in the U.S., and others who were some of the best in the world in different martial arts styles.
- 1993: Felt somewhat bored and unchallenged in the standard academic environment of dietetics studies. Some dietetics teachers were significantly overweight, and they were not outstanding examples of what they were teaching, unlike the U.S. and world-class martial arts instructors with whom I was regularly training, who where definitely -- without the least amount of questioning needed! -- the real deal. So, I visited what was considered by many to be the top martial arts training center in the world, at the time: Benny's Jet Center, in Los Angeles, CA. This training center was led by Benny "The Jet" Urquidez (courage and forgiveness), holder of 9 different Black Belts, and numerous world-championship kickboxing titles.
- 1993: Decided to pursue the challenge of moving across country, on my own, to learn what is learned during cross-country moves, and during training at one of the top martial arts training centers in the world. Again, the school where I obtained my Black Belt, in Delaware, was also outstanding. And, I was very well-prepared (extremely well-prepared) to train and compete with many of the advanced martial artists who were also training there, and even with some of the school's professional fighters.
- 1993, 2003, 2005: I moved close to 3,000 miles three times (in 1993, before the Internet became popular, and in 2003 and 2005), to pursue direct studies with world-class experts in my fields of interest.
- Now, in 2020 (15-27 years later), education has adapted and changed to become more effective and deliver a similar educational model. This change is in the form of education from top universities being offered online. Examples: Harvard University and University of Pennsylvania.
- One major difference, though, is that in addition to direct studies with top experts in my fields of interest, I learned how to excel in unknown, often very challenging situations, far from home, where it was win or go home, and learning everything necessary to excel was part of the training. Excelling in business is the same type of challenge.
- Quotes on effective education and innovative, highly effective, 21st century education:
- Academic chairs are many, but wise and noble teachers are few; lecture-rooms are numerous and large, but the number of young people who genuinely thirst after truth and justice is small. Albert Einstein.
- Repetition does not transform a lie into a truth. Franklin D. Roosevelt.
- If you want to learn to swim jump into the water. On dry land no frame of mind is ever going to help you. Bruce Lee.
- If mere mechanical efficiency can make everyone a martial artist, then all is well. Unfortunately, combat, like freedom, is something that can not be preconceived. Bruce Lee.
- There is always a best way of doing everything. Ralph Waldo Emerson.
- I am easily satisfied with the best. Winston Churchill.
- Quality is never an accident; it's always the result of high intention, sincere effort; intelligent direction and skill execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives. John Ruskin.
- 1993: Learned "The Art of the Deal" directly from Los Angeles' high rollers -- the owners of top nightclubs on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, while working at The Roxbury Restaurant and Nightclub. There was a movie about the place called A Night at the Roxbury, which had some funny scenes, and Jim Carey later added himself to the movie during a Saturday Night Live show. Mainly, I learned that Hollywood was the "let's make a deal" town, and if you can talk your way into something (convince yourself first, then others), you can be successful in new adventures, while living in a new town, far from home. I often had to talk my way into getting paid nightly at the bar by the business owners!
- 1994: Resumed my dietetics studies in California at Cal State Northridge (Los Angeles).
- 1994: There was way too much smoke at Roxbury; it was legal to smoke in bars at the time, and the bar was full of smoke. I noticed a chain of large health food stores that were pretty awesome, called Mrs. Gooch's, which were eventually bought by Whole Foods Market. And, one of the stores was within a mile of Cal State Northridge. I applied, and I was hired as a clerk in the Nutritional Supplements, Books and Body Care Department. And, I quickly noticed that I was learning more about nutrition while working in the Mrs. Gooch's/Whole Foods Market store than during my dietetics studies. Mrs. Gooch's/Whole Foods Market provided extensive team member and consumer education programs (LA Times interview, podcast interview).
- There were thousands of products, and there was a very large amount of product information to manage, along with the information contained within 1,000 to 1,500 book titles regularly sold by the stores. And, a primary responsibility for my work was to be on top of the information.
- Page 2 of 2: Detailed Information About My Whole Foods Market/Mrs. Gooch's/Dietetics Educational Training.

- 1994 to present: Independent studies directly with many of the top doctors, researchers and clinics in the U.S. and the world in the fields of nutrition-based medicine, natural healthcare and alternative medicine.
- 1995 to present: Since the mid-1990s, the Internet has been a rapidly emerging and quickly changing medium -- something best studied directly (and something that has changed many industries, including the operations of many businesses and the field of education). There is no better way to study such a medium than direct studies, and I've pursued this path for a large part of my ongoing educational training since 1995.
- 1999 to 2001: Moved back to the East Coast to be with family and study computers, so I would be able to share the advanced healthcare research I had come across while working in Los Angeles online. I began working at the local CompUSA store 30 hrs./wk., in addition to 30 hrs./wk. at Whole Foods Market's store in Philadelphia. CompUSA was one of the best places to learn about computer products and software, at the time. I completed educational training courses in Microsoft Office, Internet Research, QuickBooks and HTML, which were taught in the training center of CompUSA stores. Some courses taught there were Microsoft Certified courses approved for college credit. (I did not pursue college credit for the coursework.)
- 2001 to 2002: Completed a 24 credit educational program in web coding studies from a small, local web training school (The Chubb Institute, in Springfield, PA, which was later bought by, and became a branch of, Anthem College). The instructors there were on the cutting-edge of the rapidly emerging fields of web coding, e-business development and Internet marketing. My primary web teacher graduated first in his class at the University of Pennsylvania, then received his master's degree, with honors, from Harvard.
- 2002 to present: Independent, ongoing studies in computer software programs and web coding languages (HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, Microsoft Office, Adobe Dreamweaver, Photoshop, QuickBooks and others) from top online sources, including W3C.org and WHATWG.org (organizations that oversee web coding standards for the Internet), and W3Schools.com (a top web coding training website; and a top 100 ranked website, in terms of total web traffic, out of the 1.7 billion+ websites online; these websites have become the Internet's "Harvard University" of web coding studies).
- 2003: After moving to Pittsburgh at the end of 2002 to help Whole Foods Market open a new store, I moved to Seattle to train directly with U.S. and world-class experts in the fields of nutrition-based medicine and natural healthcare (some of whom are mentioned on the above Whole Foods Market/Dietetics Education Details webpage).
- 2003: Upon arriving in Seattle, I encountered a bad landlord, and we ended up going to court to settle the issues -- my first experience with the legal system, a few months after arriving 3,000 miles from home. A roommate and I had to move out of the house, because it was not safe to stay at the residence (due to the landlord). We had both just moved to Seattle, with nowhere else to go, so we stayed in the car, ate out at buffets, and showered in a fitness center in the morning. Then, in the middle of the court case, the car was stolen! Again, we had nowhere to go, so I knocked on the door of a local church, which was about 200 yards from where the car was stolen, which was near my employer's business. They did not have a place to stay, but the pastor I met there simply provided a great example of doing good, and leading with character. I picked up a rental car, and the stolen car was recovered (stripped down for parts, and totaled), and I eventually got another car. During this process, I was very tired in court, and I did not present information very effectively. And, the landlord lied many times while under oath (I didn't even think people did that, at the time!), and he got away with it (somewhat). I knocked on the church door again, and I asked another pastor what he thought. He was the assistant pastor. He didn't really know what to say, but he said, "Do you mind if I pray for you?" I said OK. My martial arts training studies had somewhat taken me away from some of the good teachings in the Bible. The pastor prayed that I would be able to leave the landlord situation behind, forgive the landlord, and that God would show me a better way -- other good and great things to do with my life and my abilities. That was very hard to do, since I'm very competitive, and I had studied battle strategy from many top martial artists and many top books (Bruce Lee was a philosophy major, and many of his writings were about efficiency, and effective combat principles). Well, I followed the pastor's suggestion and his prayer request, since they seemed pretty powerful. And, letting go of the past, and focusing on forgiveness and the future did provide freedom to focus on my web coding, Internet marketing and health research work, while living in Seattle (video: a related message on faith and forgiveness by Benny Urquidez's sister and brother-in law, after their son was killed in a gang related shooting in Los Angeles, the year before I arrived there). And, after two years staying in my car in Seattle (the last thing I wanted was another landlord!), eating out at inexpensive buffets, showing in the gym, and studying and working late most nights on my web coding and health studies in a 24 hr. Kinkos...and not making much money while living in Seattle (less than 15-20K/yr.), but learning a great deal about highly advanced nutrition-based medicine and natural healthcare, I was hired for well over six figures, upon returning home to the East Coast at the end of 2005, and spending the beginning of 2006 writing about effective leadership philosophy -- quotes, including faith not doubt, and Good to Great book summary, and what it takes to excel (2). This was after two years in Seattle of attending the helpful church often two times per week (once for Wednesday evening Bible study, and once, and sometimes twice on Sundays). The leader of the church had a doctorate degree in leadership/church leadership, and he was a highly successful sports coach. And, other church members where also great examples of their faith, and great leadership examples. So again, I received outstanding "home school" type of educational training, which prepared me very effectively for future projects. It was during a mid-week Men's Group Bible Study, that I heard the message, through prayer, to focus on developing both my healthcare research and web coding/Internet marketing knowledge and abilities, not one or the other (which, at the time, was a question weighing heavily on my mind). And, about one year later, the church hosted the Mensa exam test, to help show church members their gifts and their blessings.
- 2004: Passed the Mensa exam, then took about another (estimated) 40 PhD developed personal profile tests, to try to really objectively determine what my personal strengths and abilities were. The results are highlighted and summarized on my personal profile web page. I cried a little bit, when I received the Mensa test results, because I knew that I was smart, but I preferred learning in a different format (real-world learning and testing with world-class experts in my fields of interest, often through extremely challenging situations, along with the required success in work and fundraising to be able to fund the educational path vs. the standard educational path of book learning in a local college, where everything is all laid out for students, and low-interest student loans are easily attainable). I decided to further focus on, and more deeply focus on, independent studies in my areas of interest -- nutrition-based medicine and natural healthcare, business leadership, Internet marketing, leadership studies and martial arts.
- Related quotes on optimal educational paths by Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Bill Gates, Bruce Lee, Benjamin Franklin, Jim Collins (the lead researcher and author of the business best-seller, Good to Great), and Benny Urquidez (2) (world-champion kickboxer and holder of 9 different Black Belts)
- Article by Bill Gates on pattern recognition, related intellectual abilities and excelling in the Internet age: "they power they hold is hard to exaggerate"
- 2003-2005: After two years of work on a web project in Seattle, I had led (or God led my studies, educational path and work efforts) a website for an alternative medicine clinic, medical school, wellness spa, and line of nutritional supplements from non-functional (outdated content, non-functional online store, and less than 10 visitors per day) to a top 100,000 ranked website on the Internet -- more web traffic than over 99.5% of the websites online, at the time, and more traffic than over ~75% of the Fortune 500 companies, at the time. And...produced online sales of educational courses for over $11K per order, way back in 2004! This was after the business owner insisted that the courses would never sell online. So, I wrote all of the marketing copy, produced the necessary web coding, and posted the courses for sale online anyway, during my off hours from work, in the evening, at a 24 hr. Kinkos. And, the first course sold online for $4-5K (a single course vs. the above two levels of courses + master's degree program course $11K price) within the following 2-3 weeks' time! Then, about 4-6 weeks later, there was the first $11K/order online sale. And, of course, the business owner approved of the work, which would never have happened if I continued down the path of appeals and fighting with the landlord.
- 2006: Hired at the E-Commerce Director of a top division of a 300 million/yr. e-commerce company -- and all of the great, real-world learning that goes with the position. This work included a five figure hiring fee -- a similar to the amount of my prior yearly income. Again, on this project, I worked with many outstanding business leaders and coworkers (very successful, innovative, cutting-edge Internet business leaders and e-commerce experts), who taught me a great deal. And, due to my real-world experience/real-world educational training on the prior web project for the medical clinic/school/wellness spa/line of nutritional supplements business, I was able to help lead one of the top divisions of the 300 million/yr. e-commerce company to the Most Profitable Division in the Company Award, and a top 50,000 web site traffic ranking, in much less time than on the prior project (only about 4-5 months of effort and team leadership were needed), since I had already learned the way, the real-world way, on the prior projects. I know...kind of sounds like Forrest Gump, and I've been called that. :)

- Interview with Benny Urquidez on real-world testing as proof, not theories (2):
- Interviewer: "Sensei, you have a favorite saying, which I love. When people try to give you information, you ask them, 'What personal life experience do you have with what you're telling me?' Could you go into that, because I think that's so important? It's not just a theoretically based curriculum, it's born out of hard work, it's born out of being in the ring and actually doing it.
- Benny Urquidez: "Right. You know, a lot of times, people will like to talk about theories, and, to me, when they talk about theories, I say, 'Well, let's test it.' See, because I'm one that likes, I'm a believer that you have to test it. I mean, we can talk about anything, and have theories and thoughts, and everybody has ideas, but to have an idea, and not know if it works or not...I'm the one who likes to test it. I'm the one who likes to get glazed. And so, in this way, of people asking me all the time, you know, what about this, and what about that, I say let's test it. Let's see if it works or not. And that's my best way of knowing, because people, so many times, you know, ask me, 'Does it really work?' And, I've already proven it."
- Interviewer: "Sensei, you have a favorite saying, which I love. When people try to give you information, you ask them, 'What personal life experience do you have with what you're telling me?' - With the emergence of the Internet and online learning, we now live in a "meritocracy," which essentially increases the focus on real-world talent, effort, and achievement over other things: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meritocracy.
- Discussions of ideal educational paths necessary for helping businesses excel often come with personal opinions (as described in the above quote). The 20-year business best seller, Good to Great, states that only 1/130 companies (.77% of companies) achieve a "great" level of business growth and financial success. This also means, indirectly, that only 1/130 companies (.77% of companies) are successful in hiring business leaders capabable of achieving such growth.
- 2006-2010, and 2015: Managed the website of a (or the) leader for sharing the top science and innovations from the fields of nutrition-based medicine, natural healthcare, alternative medicine and integrative medicine: Burton Goldberg, founder of Alternative Medicine magazine, author of Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide, 20+ other top books in the field, producer of four healthcare DVDs -- including one that contained the top research on healing cancer, at the time (2006-2010, and likely still today): Cancer Conquest: The Best of Conventional and Alternative Medicine, and a movie for release in the theaters.
- Burton stated that he expected that I would continue on sharing his research [and related research] after he had passed away (he passed away in 2016). I currently do this through individual healthcare consulting and posting related healthcare research online (1, 2). Additional information on my work with Burton Goldberg.
- 2009: Managed the website of a small government website, which was, and is definitely needed for a true free marketplace for organic food and nutrition-based medicine/natural healthcare/alternative medicine to be able to thrive.
- 2008-2012: Managed the website of a local church. Produced about 200 pages of content, including favorite Christmas videos music playlist, and lists of Bible verses by topic. As with the above research and Internet marketing projects, I learn best by direct research, testing and work on real-world projects.
- 2013: Comprehensive Fundraising Training provided by The Leadership Institute, one of the training organizations in Washington, DC. Topics included online and direct mail copywriting, marketing, and fundraising, led by many of DC’s top experts in these fields.
- 2015: Completed Intro to Financial Accounting course, taught by instructors from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (an online course hosted on Coursera.org): Grade: 99.2%.
- 2011 to 2017: Accounting and tax code research and audit defense. Successfully managed the accounting practices (and all of the related supporting document preparation needs) for two healthcare businesses, a construction business, and three individuals during tax audits. These projects provided extensive real-world studies in accounting, law and the principles upon which our nation were founded.
- 1994 to Present: Independent studies in nutrition-based medicine, natural healthcare research, web coding, Internet marketing and business leadership, and work on related projects with leaders in these fields.
Traditional Educational Studies:
- 2001-2002: Diploma, Web Design, Chubb Institute/Anthem College, 3.63 GPA.
- My primary web teacher graduated first in his class at the University of Pennsylvania, then completed his master’s degree at Harvard University.
- 1984-1995 (Mostly part-time studies, while pursuing advanced martial arts training and independent nutrition studies):
